Starting the Journey from Quito or The Secret Garden Cotopaxi
The adventure begins early in the morning, typically around 7:00 am, with departure from either Quito or The Secret Garden Cotopaxi, depending on where travelers are staying. Both options provide a smooth and organized start to the day.
For travelers leaving from Quito, the journey south through the Andes becomes part of the experience itself. The drive follows the famous Avenue of the Volcanoes, offering spectacular views of valleys, farmland, and surrounding peaks. Along the way, the group stops at a traditional roadside location to enjoy a warm local meal. This stop allows hikers to fuel their bodies before entering higher altitude terrain and prepares everyone for the physical challenge ahead.
Hiking Through the Paramo Toward the Summit
After entering Cotopaxi National Park, transportation continues toward Limpiopungo Lake, located at approximately 3,850 metres above sea level. This is where the trek officially begins.
The trail gradually ascends through the paramo ecosystem, a unique high-altitude landscape filled with open plains, volcanic rock, and alpine vegetation. The hike includes a mix of steady uphill sections and more challenging terrain as the altitude increases.
As hikers approach the upper part of the mountain, the route becomes steeper and more technical. The final section requires light scrambling across loose rocks, adding an exciting element of adventure to the climb. This part of the route demands focus and determination, but it remains accessible to motivated hikers with good physical condition.
Reaching the summit of Rumiñahui Central is a moment that feels both challenging and deeply rewarding. The views from the top stretch across the Andes in every direction, creating one of the most impressive panoramas inside the national park.
Descending Safely and Returning After a Full Day of Adventure
After enjoying time at the summit to rest, take photos, and celebrate the achievement, the descent begins back toward the parking area. The return hike allows travelers to experience the landscape from a different perspective while gradually moving back to lower altitude.
Once the group reaches the base area, transportation returns to The Secret Garden Cotopaxi, where a late lunch is typically served in a relaxed and comfortable setting. For travelers returning to Quito, the journey continues back to the city in the afternoon.

The trek begins near Limpiopungo Lake at around 3,850 metres and gradually climbs through paramo terrain before reaching steeper sections near the summit.
Previous hiking experience is recommended, especially for activities at high altitude, but technical climbing experience is not required. Yes, the Rumiñahui Central trek is an excellent acclimatisation hike for higher altitude climbs in Ecuador. Weather conditions in Cotopaxi National Park can change quickly, so proper mountain clothing is essential. Hikers should wear warm layers, a waterproof jacket, comfortable hiking pants, gloves, and a hat. Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are strongly recommended because the terrain can be rocky and uneven near the summit.
