JAMU LODGE – AMAZON EXPERIENCE IN CUYABENO

A LODGE BUILT IN HARMONY WITH THE JUNGLE

Jamu means “Armadillo” in the Siona indigenous language. The lodge sits on the banks of the Cuyabeno River, just 15 minutes from the beautiful Laguna Grande.

Built in traditional Amazonian style, the lodge features rustic wooden architecture, high thatched roofs, and comfortable private rooms designed to blend naturally with the surrounding rainforest.

The property includes three attractive suites and two observation towers that provide incredible views over the jungle canopy.

Originally built by its owner Guillermo in the 1990s, the lodge reflects a deep respect for nature while providing travelers with a comfortable and authentic jungle stay.

Rooms are private and designed for couples or small groups. You will not share your room with other travelers. Prices are based on a minimum of two guests.

WALK THROUGH THE HEART OF THE RAINFOREST

After breakfast, your guide will lead a hike through the primary rainforest lasting about three to four hours. Along the way, you will discover the incredible biodiversity of the Amazon, including medicinal plants, giant Ceibo trees, insects, and the unique ecosystems of the jungle.

After lunch and a short rest at the lodge, the afternoon continues with a canoe exploration through the lagoons and rivers. You may see butterflies, birds, and if you are lucky, the famous pink river dolphins.

The day ends with a beautiful sunset before returning to the lodge for dinner. In the evening, a night canoe excursion takes place in search of caimans along the riverbanks.

EXPERIENCE THE CULTURE OF THE AMAZON

On the third day you will visit the Tarapuy indigenous community.

Here you will learn how to prepare Casabe, a traditional bread made from yuca, a staple food of Amazonian communities. Visitors can participate in the preparation process and learn about daily life and traditions passed down through generations.

After returning to the lodge in the afternoon, you will have time to relax before an evening jungle walk.

This night walk focuses on discovering nocturnal insects such as spiders, geckos, and scorpions while experiencing the unique sounds of the rainforest after dark.

Your final day begins early with optional birdwatching before breakfast, one of the most magical moments in the rainforest.

After breakfast, you will begin the canoe journey back to the Cuyabeno Reserve Bridge where the tour concludes.

DAY 1

TheΒ  tour begins at the entrance of the Cuyabeno River where we will enjoy a delicious box lunch.

Later, our naturalist guide will provide information about the Reserve and important recommendations to start the two-hour navigation on the Cuyabeno River to Jamu Lodge.

During the canoe ride you get a first look at the jungle and you can see different types of birds such as caciques, orioles and the prehistoric bird Hoatzin.

You may also be able to see a variety of monkeys and other jungle animals, depending on weather and weather conditions. We will arrive at Jamu Lodge around 4:30 pm.

At that time you will be shown to your rooms and you can relax a bit. After the siesta we will leave the lodge to swim in the lagoon and see a beautiful sunset in the middle of the Laguna Grande. Then you will return to the camp for dinner, and you can finish your first day in the jungle, relax in a hammock or have a drink at the bar.

Day 2

Your second day begins with a delicious breakfast, then we will take a walk of approximately 3 to 4 hours through the primary forest, where the guide will explain to us about a tropical forest and medicinal plants.

You can also see large trees like the CEIBO or small insects like ants.

We will return to the lodge to have lunch and take a break and in the afternoon we will go out to see the beautiful butterflies and swim in the lagoon. If possible we will be able to observe the beautiful brushed dolphins and enjoy the impressive sunset. Then, we return to the lodge for dinner.

At night we carry out a nocturnal activity, focused on the search for alligators on the banks of the river.

Day 3

After breakfast we set off in a canoe down the river for about an hour to visit a family from the Tarapuy community.

We will be able to learn to prepare Casabe, a traditional Yuca bread, where we will help in its elaboration.

We will learn to use the materials of the jungle to make bread, in this we spend the whole day. We will return to the Lodge at approximately two in the afternoon.

After lunch we have relaxation activities; To end the day we will have a short walk through the primary forest focused on observing nocturnal insects, such as spiders, gekos or scorpions and listening to the noises and sounds of the night.

Day 4

The last day of the 4d/3n tour, early in the morning before breakfast, we will have a bird watching excursion that is optional and will depend a lot on the weather conditions; Upon returning to the lodge we will have a delicious breakfast and then the transfer back to the Cuyabeno Reserve Bridge where the tour ends.

Jamu Lodge is located inside the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The lodge sits on the banks of the Cuyabeno River, about 15 minutes downstream from Laguna Grande, one of the most beautiful lagoons in the reserve.

Most travelers reach Cuyabeno by flying or taking an overnight bus from Quito to Lago Agrio. From Lago Agrio, transportation takes you to the Cuyabeno Bridge, where the journey continues by motorized canoe along the river to Jamu Lodge.

Cuyabeno is home to incredible biodiversity. Visitors often see monkeys, birds, frogs, insects, butterflies, and caimans. With a bit of luck, you may also spot the famous pink river dolphins in the lagoons.

No experience is required. The tour is guided by experienced naturalist guides who lead all activities, including jungle walks, canoe trips, and wildlife observation.

Travelers should bring lightweight clothing, long sleeves for jungle walks, insect repellent, sunscreen, a flashlight, comfortable shoes, and a rain jacket. Rubber boots and rain ponchos are usually provided by the lodge.
